Dorkbot Barcelona 2018

Next September 13th a new edition of Dorkbot – the community of people who do strange things with electricity in Barcelona– will be held in Hangar. This edition will be mainly focused on music and we will count on the collaboration of Brew By Code, a craft beer made especially for us. Save the date and don’t be late, the event will start at 7PM.

Bounceybox , the vintage suitcase turned into portable musical equipment.
Bounceybox was born around two years ago with the aim of joining music, design and vintage aesthetics. It is a tribute to the underground culture of the 80s, when the marvelous and enormous boomboxes were carried down the street. Besides vintage design, a differential note is wireless connectivity which helps achieve a harmonic union between past and future.
All models are unique due to their creation process and are clearly different from the bluetooth loudspeakers that are created and mass-produced by major consumer electronics brands.

Familiar is a collective that focuses on the construction of sound devices, circuit modification and retro computing for creative purposes, that encourages and promotes the use of technologies and tools for cultural development. With more than six years of experience, Familiar has already carried out a multitude of workshops throughout Spain, Lisbon, Marseille, Amsterdam, Rotterdam or Gent and several Familiar Fests, a festival that combines experimental music with various workshops and seminars.

Eloquencer is the first product of Winter Modular, the Barcelona-based brand of Eloi Flores. This Eurorack sequencer revolves around the concept of “controlled randomness”: you decide when there will be randomness, and to what extent it will affect the sequences.
Designed for both live performance and production, it offers eight tracks of CVs and gates in a 16-step layout, but patterns can be chained up to 256 steps. Although the majority of the control is performed with a wide array of touch buttons, a small OLED display gives contextual information of all parameters and access to menus.

Augmented Drum Machine – José Carlos Florez
New ways to interact with a drum set

Augmented Drum Machine is an instrument whose capacities have been expanded using sound, robotics and LED lighting.

It is composed of a drum set made out of transparent acrylic, robotic arms, LED stripes, MIDI controller and a bespoke control system using open source tools (VVVV and Arduino).
The Augmented Drum Machine “robotic arms” are made of solenoids that hit a real drum set and perform the rhythm sequences sent in real time by the control interface. LED lights provide visual feedback.

REAL VIRTUALITY (RV) – Gabriel Lecup, Xavi Vinaixa, Sergi Lario
Virtual Reality Web Application

Real Virtuality is a VR application that is experienced with closed eyes and is perceived with the subconscious. It combines two brainwave synchronization techniques –blinking lights and binaural beats– to induce altered states of perception, lucid dreams, trances and hallucinations from sensory stimulation.

Both techniques explore the FFT phenomenon (frequency following response) to force brain activity to synchronize with alpha (4-7 Hz) and theta (8-13 Hz) waves, which are associated with states of dream, relaxation or transcendental meditation.

Real Virtuality provides an open and evolutive tool to explore these techniques and their endless combinations using VR technology. The users create, experiment and share their own audio visual contents, which are generated in real time through an open source web application.

IMVEC TECH
Techniques for environmental survival.

Survival on a hostile planet will depend on how we readapt and use our collective thinking model and our basic exploration, monitoring and environmental research tools.

They design Free Libre open source software and hardware devices to empower citizen science and investigate environmental concerns. Their technologies include using ballon and kite photography for aerial mapping of polluting areas that are affordable, easy to fly and accessible everywhere.

Some of their tools (and the how-tos to build them) are available on the website’s project. In a world contaminated by large companies we need to build affordable and accessible tools to protect ourselves.

Zynthian

Zynthian is a sound synthesis platform that works on open source software and hardware as it is based on Raspberry Pi. Its small size and ease of use make Zynthian a perfect tool for the studio, audio production and sound design, and live performances. Easy to configure, hackable and update-friendly, Zynthian is open to anybody who wants to build their own Zynthian Box and thus contributing to its software development. Step by step, Zynthian is consolidating its community of users and currently there are people building their Zynthian boxes all over the world.
You can find the complete tech specs here:

Haptical Waves – Xavi Manzanares dAAX

Haptical Waves is a dual listening device (auditive and haptic). A generative audio bot plays in real time a musical composition through integral body listening.
The auditive listening is made through binaural sound using headphones, while the haptical listening transports to the body the composition’s sub frequencies through the OHWaveSurf boards.
This dual sensorial experience features a minimalist composition called OHPI, which is based on the 13 dimensions presented by some physics theories. Based on the 27.7(360º/13D=27.7) ratio and its proportions, that proposes a listening experience connected with cosmology and space.

La Machine à Coudre la Musique – Gabriel Lecup

La Machine a coudre la musique (LMACLM) is an audiovisual performance that wants to induce the audience into hypnotic and oneiric altered states of perception, upon the repetition of both visual and sonic micro-loops.
The piece features a sewing machine that has been transformed into an amplified and digitally processed string instrument that combines three systems that adapt and synchronize each other over time: mechanical (the machine itself), human (the performer) and digital (the processes and effects)
LMACLM was created with the goal to explore natural scales, finding harmonics in a tensioned string that has evolved into a performance. Since its inception in 2012 the piece has been performed regularly at experimental and electroacoustic music events (HS63, Recycl’Art, Le Placard, etc.)

Ocean Dream – Patricio Rivera

Patricio Rivera is back to Dorkbot, this time, with the kinetic sculpture Ocean Dream.
In this piece, the artist reconstructs symbolically the maritime space crossed by the “illegal” migrants in their attempt to get to the European coasts.
Ocean Dream consists on a set of sound generators based on the behavior of the ocean drum, a percussion instrument that evokes the sound of the ocean waves.

The sculpture moves in real-time from the data collected by a floating buoy in the sea of Lesbos that tracks the movement of the ocean.

The audience experiments sensations that are only “illegal” migrants are able to feel in their flight.

Ocean Dream has been produced within the Hangar artistic residencies program and was selected by the Mostra Sonora i Visual at Convent de Sant Agustí (Barcelona) last June.

Note: Ocean Dream is also the name of Spanish luxury cruise

Ewen Chardronnet – The Laboratory Planet

The newspaper “The Laboratory Planet” was created in 2007 at the initiative of Ewen Chardronnet and the group of artists Bureau d’études who assumed overall editorial responsibility since.

Publication dependent on funding opportunities, four issues have been published between 2008 and 2011, with mixed prints 5,000 copies in French and 5,000 in English.

The Issue 5 : “Alien Capitalism: Xenopolitics of the Anthropocene” was published on February 4, 2016, for Transmediale in Berlin and funded through a Goteo crowdfunding campaign.

The dissemination was carried out by support networks or at activist or cultural events or interventions in academic contexts.
